Hi! This week we’re creating our video. Our campaign is well underway now meaning we wanted our video to go beyond the general ‘introduction’ to the topic that our infographic and podcast had done.
Friday 10th March
The main dilemma with the video was that we weren’t sure on our original idea of having a ‘mascot’ because, practically, we couldn’t work out how to do it. So we used our seminar time to draft out other ideas and decided on conducting a series of mini interviews. These mini interviews would mean we’d gather primary data on our campaign and the impact of dark patterns, allowing us to connect further with our audience.
This fluid nature of our idea meant that as researcher this week I needed to make sure that I provided a broad spectrum of information because we weren’t set on what exactly we would require yet.
Sunday 12th March
I began conducting the research for the week. We have two researchers this week which meant I worked closely with them, keeping in constant discussion so we both knew what exactly we were doing and covered all bases. I decided to present the research in a table which I thought would be clearer than just a list of information. I defined the dark pattern on the left hand side of the table and then provided clear image examples in the other column. This is a good base for my research that I will broaden throughout the week.
Thursday 16th March
I continued developing my research, making sure to stay in contact with my team so that the research reflected their needs. After discussions with the team I also drafted some interview questions, using my research to help guide this.
Final research checks involved making sure everything was referenced properly so if used we could attribute proper credit. Overall, I think my researcher role went well this week - the team didn’t express a need for any additional information and we were able to film the video with what was provided. However, next time I would recommend that I conduct a plan before I begin researching so that I’m more focused and don’t get side-tracked too much with the vast amount of information there is out there.
Our video was completed over the weekend and we continued communicating on our group chat to support the production designers in their editing, in case they needed any additional help.
